Simplifying potato planting returns – saving growers time and money

25 August 2011

Potato returns have never been easier thanks to the new e-planting and e-buyer returns system. Growers and buyers can now update and complete their returns quickly and simply, reducing the need for traditional paper maps and eliminating extra administration time and costs.

Login to e-planting and e-buyer returns system at:- www.potatocouncil.co.uk

To use the e-planting or e-buyer returns programme a broadband internet connection is required. To register please contact the Levy Collection Team on 02476 478606 or email levy@ahdb.org.uk.

Once registered, the programme is really straightforward to use. For e-planting simply click on the map and search for a field by inputting the map reference or FIS number or the place name and then complete the required fields: field or farm name; number of hectares planted, as well as choosing the variety and market sector from the drop-down menus – it really is that simple!

The process is repeated for all plantings, after which the detail is submitted directly to Potato Council. All the information is stored securely – only the registered grower can access it to amend or delete entries. For added efficiency, there is also the facility to stop and save at any time, as well as the option to print the maps or a complete list of the planting return details entered, for easy reference at a later date.

The website, which is now entering its third year, has been attracting increasing numbers of growers, and has received plenty of positive feedback to date, including comments such as:

“I’ve just filled in my planting returns online and found it very good indeed. We rent land and find it difficult to get the field numbers. I didn’t have that problem this year – click on the map and away you go! Well done,” George Lambert, Denholm Potato Growers Ltd.

“Thank you for making the electronic filing of potato returns so simple to use, it was a pleasure to do it and easier than paper returns,” Douglas Gordon.

“Just wanted to say what a brilliant returns system, very easy to navigate and I did not even need to read the instructions, enjoyed using the map,” Kenneth Goodger.

The site was created as a simple alternative to the traditional paper returns system and to help streamline the process for growers.

It is incredibly easy to use but comes complete with an online user guide for first-time users and is supported by our technical team. The map data is validated instantly and there are prompts at each stage to ensure that no inaccurate or incomplete returns can be filed, saving a huge amount of time.

Growers can still print and keep hard copies for their records. They can also rest assured that the system is completely secure.

“As many growers who have piloted and used the site since its development can testify, it really is worth having a go.”
